Audio-visual - Tales from a Trawlerman (for Hull City Council)

We researched, planned and wrote the scripts to tell the story of a Trawlerman’s life in the 1960’s in Hull.

These four separate films were commissioned for use in the Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City Learning Programme and are available to schools through the Hull Curriculum online learning platform. @HullMaritime @HeritageLearn.

They cover these topics:

Setting Sail: Preparing for a trip

On Watch: How the watches work, who does what and how

On Deck: The work done on the deck during a trip at sea

Going Home: Preparing to return home to land the catch

The script was based on a series of oral history interviews conducted by Gordon some years earlier and uses phonetic speech to maintain the authenticity of the voice of the local fishing communities.

The films were produced by Storyboard Media of Hull

Charles Trzeciak - Learning Officer:

“We are extremely pleased with the set of five videos, written and performed by Gordon Meredith, which explore the experiences of Hull’s trawlerman at sea. So far, the videos have been accessed by over 1000 primary school-aged children in Hull, and the feedback we have received from schools has been very positive”.
