Audio-visual - Skidby Mill (for East Riding of Yorkshire Council)
We planned and wrote the scripts to tell the story of Skidby Mill from the viewpoint of the Mill owners Benjamin and Joseph Thompson.
The Year is 1954 and :
Gordon plays the adult version of Joseph Thompson reminiscing about his childhood at the mill when his father Benjamin Thompson was in charge. In a series of beautifully shot and silent scenes, Joseph as a child is played by ten year old Oliver Sweeting while Gordon swaps his hats to play his older father, Benjamin.
The films were produced by Imagen Photography of Beverley
Background:
Joseph took over the business from his father Benjamin and ran it until it was taken over by the East Riding Council in the 1970’s. Joseph talks about how the Mill has ground flour on this site since the 1870’s, a little known fact. He tells us about the technology used to power the mill and how they changed from wind power to electric. The survival of the mill was dependent on the Thompsons moving into animal feeds. A less interesting topic, but vital to the survival of the mill and the reason why it still stands today.
Dr David Marchant - Curator, Skidby Mill:
“I think the film looks really fabulous, quite moving in fact; as you know I’m not an industrial historian, but it did have an emotional pull as well as being visually striking too. I loved the way you morphed between the different characters and time periods and also managed to keep modern features out of shot wherever possible. I’m really pleased with how it turned out and many thanks for all your efforts in getting it produced. I’m sure it will be of great interest to our visitors.”.
