Folk Theatre - Broadside on (Echoes from the Shipyard)
Broadside On is a sideways look at the men and women who worked at the Beverley Shipyard during the heyday of the shipbuilding industry in East Yorkshire.
It is a story told through words and song about the thriving industry on the banks of the River Hull where new ships would be launched sideways into the narrow river before being towed down the river to Hull to be fitted out
Weaving the story carefully around the oral testimonies of former shipyard workers, Gordon Meredith brings their voices to life, capturing the energy and emotions of a workforce that designed and built some of the most seaworthy vessels ever to be launched. Gordon once again dipped into the archives to combine his love of social history, theatre and music in what is an entertaining and thought-provoking show. An evocative and beautiful soundtrack created by Wai Wan from percussive sounds recorded on board the trawler, the Arctic Corsair, transports the audience to the depths of the steel hulled ships built and launched in Beverley.
Dr Alex Ombler - ERYC Archives:
“The play draws on the oral testimonies of riveters, welders, shipwrights and draughtsmen, and Gordon Meredith cleverly brings life to the stories and reminiscences of those who once laboured in the shipyard”.
